Scottish League One Week 15: Three things we learned as East Fife sack Young
Scottish League One provided yet again another entertaining week in Scottish football as the season nears its half-way point and teams break for the Scottish Cup Third Round next weekend. Out of all five matches in the division, here are the three talking points from this week…
Clyde win against East Fife to strand Fifers at the bottom
A goal from Kyle Connell gave the visitors the lead at Broadwood, however, a goal from club captain David
Goodwillie and a double from Ross Cunningham ensured the home side took the three points. The win for Danny Lennon’s men takes them five points clear of the Fifers who now find themselves stranded at the foot of the table. The victory also sees the home side turn a corner in their form of late, having halted a four-game losing run with two draws ahead of this weekend. However, defeat for East Fife proved to be the final straw for beleaguered boss Darren Young, as the club announced his departure on Sunday evening.
Cove beat Airdrie as Diamonds slip off the top of the table
Late goals from Mitch Meggison and Fraser Fyvie ensured Paul Hartley’s visitors the three points as they went two points above Airdrie to dethrone them as league leaders. Both teams went into the match at the Excelsior Stadium knowing that a win would have them top of the pile going into the Scottish Cup weekend.
The win for Cove maintains their record as the top-form side in the division, having gained 11 points from their last five matches.
For Ian Murray, the home defeat sees his Airdrie side lose momentum in the early title race, in what is a hugely competitive league.
Queen’s Park lose at Peterhead to extend winless run
Despite Luca Connell putting the visitors in front at Balmoor, a Scott Brown penalty and a goal from Russell McLean turned the game in Peterhead’s favour. The victory for Peterhead ensured they maintained their impressive home form, with Jim McInally’s side having won 14 points out of a possible 17.
The defeat continues Queen’s Park’s collapse in league form, with the Spiders now without a win in five and just one win in seven.
Laurie Ellis’s men now slip to fourth and despite a 0-0 draw at home to Clyde last week, supporters have
become irritated at their club’s stale performances of late after what was a promising start.
