SWPL League Cup: Glasgow City vs Celtic - Match Review
Celtic won a fierce battle against Glasgow City to acquire their first trophy under Fran Alonso and their first trophy since 2010. 3,645 fans attended the final at Firhill on Sunday to cheer on the league champions and the girls in green.
Hibernian were the defending champions but were knocked out of the competition by Celtic. Goal scorer Caitlin Hayes sealed the cup for the hoops as league title holders Glasgow City missed out once again on another trophy.
The first half slowed down after the opening goal however, Glasgow City continuously applied pressure and were almost awarded a penalty after Cheyenne Shorts slid in on Ode Fulutudilu, but the South African managed to stay on her feet.
Celtic manager Fran Alonso said:” It’s an amazing feeling, I’m extremely proud of every single player. The fans were amazing this was for them.
“I’ve been working in football for 15 years and this was my favourite game.”
He then went on to say:
For the losing side, the final marks six years since Glasgow City last won the SWPL League Cup. Glasgow City head coach Eileen Gleeson said:” It was a disappointing day and performance for everybody, we failed to create any chances or really test their keeper.
“The final won’t be a defining moment this season is the message for the girls, it’s a game we didn’t reach our standards or levels we expected.”
