Cinch Scottish League One: Three Things we Learned
The third tier provided yet another entertaining week of Scottish football, as teams continue their quest to either finish in the promotion-play offs or pull clear of relegation danger. Let’s look at the three things we learned from this week’s results…
Cove cement their place as league leaders as Falkirk’s poor run of form continues
Goals from Morgyn Neill, Rory McAllister and Leighton McIntosh sealed the three points for the in- form visitors. The victory makes it four league wins on the trot for Paul Hartley’s men, which extends their unbeaten run to seven matches.
For Falkirk, the loss is another damaging defeat to their promotion hopes, as they are now four points adrift off fourth place. The Bairns appointed new boss Martin Rennie on Friday evening, who will hope to spark an upturn in his new team’s fortunes as they try and fight their way back into contention for promotion.
Montrose remain in second place with a convincing victory over Dumbarton
Conner Duthie opened the scoring for the home side, however, a brace from Graham Webster followed by a goal from Liam Callaghan secured the three points for the high-flying visitors. The win for Stewart Petrie’s men keeps the Gable Endies hot on the heels of league leaders Cove, with only three points separating the top two teams. For Stevie Farrell’s Dumbarton, they drop to ninth in the league table, one point behind eighth placed Peterhead- who they welcome to the Rock next week.
Ally Love’s strike is the difference as Clyde defeat Alloa to move up to seventh
The striker’s goal in the 57th minute proved to be the winning goal as Clyde continued their upturn in form to take the three points against the home side. The game marked the return of Bully Wee manager Danny Lennon and goalkeeper Neil Parry to the Indodrill. Lennon was manager of the Wasps between April and December 2015, whereas Parry had left the home side to join the Cumbernauld club in August. For Lennon, the win stretches his side’s unbeaten run to five games as they pull away from the relegation places. However, for Barry Ferguson, his Alloa side are now five games without victory. The Clackmannanshire club haven’t exactly set the heather alight in the league this year, and have yet to show any signs that they have true aspirations for promotion this year. In the league’s other weekend match,
East Fife fail to cut the gap between them and ninth-place
Peterhead’s Ryan Duncan cancelled out Kyle Connell’s opener to leave Stevie Crawford’s side five points adrift at the bottom. Airdrieonians were due to host Queen’s Park, however a COVID outbreak at the Excelsior Stadium meant the match was postponed, with a new date yet to be confirmed.
