Cinch Scottish League One: Three things we learned on the week before Christmas

League One’s last group of games before the festive season was full of drama as two matches fell victim to the fog in what was a cold weekend in Scotland.

Let’s look at the three things we learned from this weekend’s results…

Bayview and Broadwood games abandoned as fog engulfs the country

East Fife’s match against Falkirk at Bayview was the first to fall foul to the weather conditions, with the referee halting the match five minutes before the break.

Aidan Kenna’s strike had the Bairns in front before the abandonment, which means new manager Martin Rennie will have to wait another week to get off to a winning start as boss. His side will welcome rivals Clyde to the Falkirk Stadium on Boxing Day.

It was also Clyde’s match against Airdrieonians that was abandoned. Two goals for Gabriel McGill either side of Rob Jones’s equaliser before the referee ended the match late in the second-half meant Airdrie missed the opportunity to strengthen their position in the promotion play-off spots.

Cove stay top of the Christmas tree to stretch gap at top to five

Goals from Jamie Masson, Mitch Meggison and a penalty from Rory McAllister ensured the victory for Paul Hartley’s table-topping side, who are now eight games unbeaten in all competitions.

The defeat for Alloa means that Barry Ferguson’s side have now, due to Peterhead’s win at Dumbarton, dropped to seventh- while the teams directly above and below them, Falkirk and Clyde have a game in hand.

The Wasps have stretched their winless run to six games, with fan disgruntlement at manager Ferguson only continuing to grow…

Peterhead win in five-goal thriller to go four points off play-off spots

Dumbarton were defeated at home by league rivals Peterhead in a game where Blue Toon goalscorer Russel McLean missed a first-half penalty.

Both teams went into the interval with the game two apiece, with Andy Geggan and Conner Duthie scoring for the home side, and Josh Mulligan and Russel McLean scoring for the visitors- with McLean clinching the winner in the 66th minute.

The win lifts Jim McInally’s men up to the dizzy heights of fifth, four points off fourth-placed Airdrieonians, while Stevie Farrell’s Sons side continue to occupy the relegation play-off spot in ninth.

In the weekend’s other match at Links Park, a penalty from Montrose’s Graham Webster and a goal from Queen’s Park’s Louis Longridge means both promotion rivals had to settle for a point.
