Premier League: Three Things we Learned as Controversy Takes Centre Stage
The premier league this weekend saw many cancellations due to high cases of COVID amongst the camps, but the games that were played still saw many talking points as teams continue to shoot up the table in the final round of fixtures before Christmas.
Referee disaster class as Liverpool lose ground (Spurs- 2 Liverpool- 2)
The question will be raised once again to the officiating during the Spurs Liverpool game as countless decisions were left up for debate, and ended Liverpool falling three points behind leaders Manchester City. Liverpool were struck by a COVID outbreak in the squad and were down to their bare bones in the midfield, having to give a first league start to academy graduate Tyler Morton, who, was clearly lacking experience in key moments.
Spurs played for the first time in a couple of weeks after they had their own COVID outbreak, and they looked the fresher side and coped with the flow of the high intensity game very well as Antonio Conte looks to strive a poor side into the top four.
There were many contentious decisions throughout this game, but the main one was definitely the referee failing to show Harry Kane a red card for what seemed to be a stud high tackle on Andrew Robertson, who was later sent off for a reckless tackle in the second half.
Leeds continue to struggle in another humbling (Leeds- 1 Arsenal- 4)
Leeds United were embarrassed yet again, and are starting to fall into the relegation fight. Teams have started to suspect as to how they play, with Marcelo Bielsa seeming to be reluctant to change his philosophy, and it will only get worse for him and his side if he’s not willing to make adjustments to his side.
Arsenal continue on their surge to potentially get top four, their youngsters continue to impress and carry them through this season, and going into Christmas, they are in the Champions League conversation but need to get a consistent run going to push for this.
Arsenal were very impressive in their dominant win against Leeds, but with a wiped squad and a poor set of tactics, the gunners played this to their advantage and let fly with four goals scored in a one sided win.
City go 3 points clear after Newcastle win (Newcastle- 0 Man City- 4)
Manchester City are now three points clear at the top of the Premier League, and have begun to pull away slowly from the teams below them. They will firmly be the team to best going into the second half of the season. They continue to play scintillating football but also keep on winning, and with Liverpool and Chelsea drawing, it was the perfect weekend for the blue side of Manchester. Newcastle never thought they would get a result this game, and it mainly would be how long they’d try to stay in the game, but defensive errors and lack of cutting edge proves to be the main concern for them once again, with a lack of communication ultimately costing them to concede the first goal. It was one way traffic yet again for Manchester City, with two first half goals from Portuguese defenders Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo ultimately setting the second half to be much the same with Newcastle almost lucky to get a touch of the ball.
