OPINION: Why Marvel are Taking Over the Superhero Gaming Universe

Marvel for the longest while have dominated the cinematic universe over DC, and the latter had the edge in the gaming universe.

But with a lack of content on DC’s part and with the rise of high-quality Marvel games, they are slowly taking over this department as well.

The Batman Arkham games were seen as the best superhero game series on the market until a human spider who wears a red spandex costume came along. When Marvel Spider-Man for the PS4 came out in 2018, the well-thought-out story and gameplay had DC and rocksteady quaking in their boots, they finally had valid competition.

I am of the mindset that Spider-Man is a Batman-inspired game, and people would criticize it for this reason alone, but I believe what Batman did, Spider-Man done better.

The web swinger has always been arguably the most popular figure in comic book history, and despite having some of the best films around, lacking in other departments and DC took full advantage, this ambitious title exclusive to the PlayStation has put Marvel back on the map for gaming.

Marvel Avengers was next to follow Spider-Man and after the rousing success of the latter, expectations were high, but Square Enix failed to replicate what Insomniac games did for Spider-Man. The game, while ambitious, was not up to a high quality and although it’s always quality over quantity, Marvel keeps looking to take over with the idea to get even more titles out.

DC continues to lack in recent titles being released and hasn’t seen one at the top since Injustice 2 over five years ago, this is allowing Marvel to play catchup and need to step up in order to take over again.

With future releases of the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights, I am skeptical about how these games will perform, as the companies that make these in Rocksteady and WB Montreal have set such high standards for myself that just an ‘okay’ game won’t be acceptable.

With the rousing success of Insomniac games spin-off title “Spider-Man Miles Morales” and the recent release of “Guardians of the Galaxy”, DC are starting to fall behind, plus with Insomniac now got two new games coming out within the next two years with one of those titles being the full-blown sequel to the successful Spider-Man title set to be released in 2023, its an exciting time to be a Marvel gaming fan and a worrying time for a DC fan.

No matter what, both Superhero franchises should be enjoyed to what the quality of game is, and a divide should not be created, but Marvel are taking over, it’s now blatantly obvious. There’s still time for DC to catch up although Marvel continue to provide quality AND quantity.
