Paul Brownlie: Motherwell Women’s Manager under pressure as side hit rock bottom of SWPL1

The former Scotland U17s coach is under pressure to turn around recent form at Alliance Park, as his side fell to the foot of the SWPL1 table this weekend.

A late Freya MacDonald winner seized all three points for newly promoted Patrick Thistle as ‘The Women of Steel’ succumbed to a 3-2 defeat.

Jade Greenshields fired the hosts in front after 10 minutes, before Lori Gardner levelled for Motherwell with a well-placed header. Kaela McDonald-Nguah would put Motherwell ahead from close range, but Cara McBrearty would level for the hosts early into the second half.

With the sides seemingly destined to share the points, Freya MacDonald netted her side a late winner after latching onto Rosie Slaters long ball, and dispatching her strike into the top right corner.

Motherwell are still yet to pick up their first points in the league this season, with Paul Brownlie’s side also suffering heavy defeats to Hibs, and defending Champions Glasgow City. Motherwell have conceded 13 goals so far this campaign whilst only managing to find the net twice.

Statistics that make for grim reading when you account for an early SWPL Cup exit, after defeats to league rivals Rangers and Aberdeen.

Defensive frailties and a lack of composure up-front have plagued Motherwell throughout the season. It is a problem that must be addressed quickly if they are to preserve their top-flight status this season.

However, the signing of player/assistant manager Leanne Crichton from Champions Glasgow City will provide some experience and leadership that Motherwell have lacked thus far.

Paul Brownlie will look to quickly address their recent form before they face last season’s runners-up Celtic before the first Lanarkshire derby of the campaign as they play host to rivals Hamilton next month.
