Gers' crushed in Ibrox embarrassment: Rangers 1-7 Liverpool

After last week’s defeat to the Reds, the Ibrox side aimed to show the fans that they were going to put up a fight against tough opposition.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair as both teams tried to get stuck in and take control of the game. Both teams had their fair share of chances, but Rangers were the first to strike in the 17th minute. Arfield hit a well-placed shot into the bottom left corner which sent the Ibrox crowd crazy and gave the Gers’ their first goal in the Champions League since 2010.

Firmino silenced the home fans just six minutes later as he scored a front post header from a corner. It was another goal conceded from a set-piece for Rangers as they went into the break level.

The Ibrox crowd still had belief as the second half commenced, although this was quickly squandered 10 minutes after the interval as Firmino secured his brace. A goal from Nunez in the 66th minute all but sealed the deal for Liverpool.

However, Klopp’s side were not finished yet as they made a triple substitution in the 68th minute. Salah came on with a point to prove, and that he did, scoring the quickest ever hat-trick in Champions League history. Elliot scored three minutes before the final whistle to rub salt in Rangers’ wounds.

Van Bronckhorst’s men are left demoralised after another heavy defeat in the competition as Liverpool were firing on all cylinders and Rangers could not contain them.

The Reds had no mercy for the home side, scoring goals right, left and centre, a result that will surely lift the confidence, not only of the players, but also the fans that have been disappointed by their recent performances.

Rangers remain firmly at the bottom of the group and face top of the table, Napoli, in two weeks' time as they hope to keep some dignity in their campaign. It would take a miracle for the Gers’ to get third place in the group and secure Europa League football.
