Why Mallorca is a better winter escape than the Canaries
When people think of Mallorca, it is often associated with family summer holidays and lovely sandy beaches. However, a recent trip to Mallorca showed that the island has just as much to offer outside of the high season.
The island itself is much quieter than it would normally be in the summer months, with many of the resorts coming towards the end of their six-month hard-working season. That said, it is the perfect time to go to the island, as it is at that time of the year that many excellent deals can be found; many bars and restaurants offer reduced prices due to the smaller number of tourists within the resorts.
The sunbed war is often spoken about when considering somewhere to go on holiday. This, however, never seems to be an issue in Mallorca at this time of year. Even when looking at one of the largest hotels in the resort of Puerto Pollensa, the Pollensa Park hotel, it was a great surprise to find that a number of sunbeds were left empty throughout the day. So, setting the alarm to grab a sunbed doesn’t need to be part of the holiday.
Tracy Ruane, owner of Palms bar in Puerto Pollensa, said: “This time of the season is one of our favourite times to run the bar. We still have our tribute acts right until the very end of October, so we still get to put on great entertainment for the tourists who come on holiday. However, it feels like we can enjoy the atmosphere even more.
“During the summer months, we are rushed off our feet, so we barely get time to say hello to everyone. This changes in October as we get more time to speak to those who come to the bar.
“The very last night of the season is our absolute favourite, though. On Halloween, we, like many others in the resort, host parties and celebrate a great season of welcoming tourists, but we also just have a bit of fun. Everyone dresses up, and we have live music and bingo. It really makes the bar feel so happy, and it makes me so glad we do what we do out here.”
As for the weather while it isn’t always guaranteed sunshine, like in the summer months on the island. It rarely rains and is also a perfect temperature for a relaxing week away from the UK. However, Mallorca has recently experienced temperatures of up to 30 degrees in October.
With all things considered, Mallorca in October has a special atmosphere to it. Many locals are gearing up for their winter rest and are in a very good mood which always transfers to great tourist experiences. So next time you consider booking an October holiday, it should be Mallorca that goes on your list instead of the Canaries, where the majority of people appear to flock too.
