World Cup 2022: Semi-Final Preview
Argentina v Croatia
Argentina’s dream of World Cup glory was almost snatched away from them in their match against the Netherlands. Although, they managed to scrape through after an intense penalty shootout which saw their keeper save two penalties. Messi, again, put on a masterclass and looks like a man that will not leave Qatar without the World Cup trophy.
Croatia were heavy underdogs in their game against Brazil. Neymar scored what could have been the goal to put the Selecao through. However, Modric’s men proved their worth with true grit and determination to equalise in the 117th minute. This match was also decided by a penalty shootout, with neither team losing any of their last five. However, when it mattered most, Croatia held their nerve and won it.
Lionel Scaloni’s men will be looking for revenge after their 3-0 defeat to Croatia in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup, but it will be difficult against a resilient Croatian side that has their eyes set on the trophy they missed out on in 2018.
Messi and Modric will both have to be at the top of their game to help carry their teams to the final. Although Messi has been the difference in almost all his games this campaign. Hopefully, he can do it again to achieve the dream he nearly achieved in 2014.
France v Morocco
France managed to pull off a positive result against England. They were second best in the game, but the penalty missed by Harry Kane was the pivotal moment in the game as it would have levelled the scoreline.
Morocco so far has had a magical journey to the semi-final, not losing a single game in their campaign after facing teams such as Croatia, Belgium, Canada and Spain. They were underestimated once again, though, in their quarter-final match against Portugal as Santos’ men demolished Switzerland 6-1. Regragui’s men achieved a historic victory over Portugal, and their legacy has been cemented as the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.
Deschamp’s men came into this tournament as reigning champions. However, many people were sceptical of them as star players such as Pogba, Kante and even Ballon D'Or winner Benzema were going to miss out. They have had a relatively easy run to the semi-final, only a surprise loss to Tunisia and a shaky performance against England have got in their way and with Morocco in their sights, it could be back-to-back finals.
Morocco defended relentlessly against Portugal and will have to regain their composure and execute another even more outstanding performance against France. This will enable them to eliminate their third European opponent in the knockout stage. It will be tough, but can they pull off another upset?
