2022 done and dusted for the Ghirls: Celtic Women year review

Fran Alonso’s side were due to welcome Motherwell to the Excelsior Stadium on Sunday, however, it was postponed. This means that the Hoops have played their last game of the year and they will return in 2023 after the winter break.

2022 was a memorable year for Alonso’s side, having pulled off some impressive results, such as the recent 7-0 win against Dundee United. They are currently three points behind current league leaders Glasgow City, which means Alonso is having a good league campaign and will hope to continue the form into the new year.

The best moment from Celtic this year was their memorable run to the final of the Scottish Women’s Cup. Alonso’s side came out on top winning the trophy after a 3-2 win against Glasgow City. It was a memorable campaign for Alonso and was his second trophy that season after already winning the League Cup against Partick Thistle at the tail end of 2021.

Some of Celtic’s memorable victories of 2022 came from the 2021/2022 season with the team pulling off some amazing results against Heart of Midlothian, Hamilton Academical, Aberdeen, Hibernian, and Spartans Women, with a combined total of more than 20 goals.

These results have inspired the Celtic supporters to attend more of the Ghirls games, with more and more fans making the effort to travel to each game this season.

When commenting on the importance of the support attending each game, Alonso said: "When there are big crowds the girls feel passionate and brave. For me, the crowd is key."

Overall, a successful cup run and dominant performances in the league has made 2022 a successful year for the Ghirls, leaving them in a good place to challenge for the league title in 2023.
