The best and worst supermarket Christmas sandwiches of 2022

Costa’s: Vegan Pigs in Blanket Panini - £5.25

Costa has always supplied a wide range of vegan products; as a brand, they take Christmas very seriously – think festive drinks, treats, and sandwiches. For this Christmas, Costa released the vegan pigs in blanket panini, an alternative to the regular meat version. While this is one of the tastier sandwiches on the list, it’s boring with a lack of creativity, especially for the higher price range. If you’re looking for a Christmas sandwich with a more realistic meat taste and texture, this one is the way to go, but be warned. It doesn’t quite bring the festive feeling you may be looking for.

★★★☆☆

Marks & Spencer’s: No Turkey Feast Christmas Sandwich - £4.35

M&S are known for their fantastic vegan range, especially regarding their alternatives for Christmas dinner. Therefore, it’s no surprise that this sandwich perfectly encapsulates Christmas joy. The vegan alternative here is wheat and vegetable protein which works extremely well with the festive combination of cranberry and spinach. The onion isn’t the best addition, but it also doesn’t ruin the sandwich by any means. However, the taste does not justify the price tag, and for two triangles of a takeaway sandwich, £4.35 is far too expensive.

★★★★☆

Asda’s: Vegan Christmas Wrap - £2.75

For as good as the price is, and the switch from a sandwich to a wrap is much appreciated, the wrap itself could be better. The amount of red cabbage is overwhelming, and the onion completely disguises the vegan alternatives, which are also somewhat disappointing. The soya protein pieces don’t give the wrap any meat texture or flavour. It’s also, most importantly, not very festive. None of the ingredients or the packaging tastes like or spreads Christmas cheer.

★★☆☆☆

Sainsbury’s: No Pig’s Under Blanket Sandwich - £2.95

The Costa panini and this sandwich by Sainsbury’s are very similar in name and taste; both are unoriginal concepts, but they are delicious. This sandwich is much more affordable than the Costa version, so if you are desperately looking for a pigs-in-blanket sandwich this festive season, you don’t have to spend over £5.00. You can head to Sainsbury’s for the same sandwich in a different form!

★★★☆☆

Morrison’s: Merry Vegan Christmas Sandwich - £2.75

What is the supermarket’s obsession with covering every vegan sandwich in red cabbage? If you do like red cabbage, then you will really love this next sandwich because it is practically the entire filling. The sandwich also doesn’t look very appealing when taken out of the packaging – probably because it’s not. The ingredients are all very common vegan alternatives; they’re very overused. They get used enough outside of the Christmas period that the use here doesn’t feel festive or special. Especially considering most vegans will have been eating this type of sandwich throughout the year.
