Five Fights Boxing Fans Need to see in 2022
With the way that the current boxing landscape is, there are some mouth-watering matchups which fight fans will be hoping to see at some point this year. We will give you our top five fights which we believe need to happen this year, along with a few honourable mentions.
1. The Winner of Usyk/Joshua Vs The Winner of Fury/Whyte
Both fights are scheduled to happen early this year with Tyson Fury already being ordered to fight his mandatory in Dillian Whyte next, meaning that there will be no step-aside deal for Anthony Joshua and so he will activate the rematch clause in his fight with Oleksandr Usyk.
The two fights will serve as semi-finals as the winners of each should be facing each other next for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world. There needs to be a number one crowned in the sports premier division in order to settle any debate. This is the biggest fight that can be made in all of boxing!
2. Errol Spence Jr Vs Terence Crawford
A fight that boxing purists have been calling out to get made for the past few years. Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford are clearly the top two fighters in the welterweight division, however, fans need to know who the number one is.
Both fighters are in the prime of their careers and both hold claims to being the number one fighter in this stacked weight class. Spence Jr holds the WBC and IBF belts, while Crawford holds the WBO title. Many feel that both men need the fight for their careers.
Spence Jr is looking to add another belt to his name in an attempt to clear out the division on his way to becoming the undisputed champion, while a lot of people feel that Crawford hasn’t fought fighters of the pedigree that Spence Jr has at welterweight in order to say that he is the number one in the division. If the fight was ever to happen, this is the year.
3. Canelo Vs Artur Beterbiev
With the number one pound for pound fighter in the world having just cleaned out the super-middleweight division, his next challenges look to be at light-heavyweight. Canelo has already won a world title in the 175lb division, when he stopped the ever-ageing Sergey Kovalev in 2019, showing that his power can carry up into the heavier divisions.
Having already became the undisputed champion at super-middleweight, Canelo Alvarez could cement his self as the best to ever do it by becoming undisputed champion in another weight class.
The next name in which boxing fans want to see him in with, is none other than frightening Russian, Artur Beterbiev. Beterbiev holds both the WBC and IBF 175lb titles and has an unbelievable record of 17-0 with every win coming by knockout.
This would be Canelo’s toughest task to date, but it is much the case of high risk, high reward. Hopefully this fight can get made this year!
4. Katie Taylor Vs Amanda Serrano
Fortunately for boxing fans, this fight has already been made and is set for April 30th at the world famous, Madison Square Garden in New York.
But let’s hope everything goes to plan and we see the two women step in the ring to face off. Fans have been calling for years for the two to face one another, with it being arguably the biggest fight in women’s boxing ever.
Katie Taylor would be defending her undisputed lightweight crown, and Amanda Serrano poses a different threat than anything the Irish boxer has faced to date. Serrano, who is now promoted by the outspoken Jake Paul, holds the record for the most world titles won in different weight classes by a female. She is also mentioned in the talks for the GWOAT (the greatest woman of all time) alongside Taylor and American middleweight Claressa Shields.
Serrano will be no pushover for the defending champion, and this is set to be Taylor’s biggest challenge and this fight even has the potential to become a trilogy. Whoever wins this fight could stake their claim as the GWOAT.
5. Jake Paul Vs Tommy Fury
Hate him or love him, Jake Paul knows how to make a name for himself, and he is slowly becoming one of the most talked about personalities in the sport. The two were set to finally meet in the ring last December, but injury ruled Tommy Fury, the younger brother of heavyweight world champion, Tyson Fury, out of the fight.
The former YouTube megastar, attracts a different kind of audience to his fights, as does Fury, the winner of hit UK television show, Love Island. A. lot of boxing fans are drawn into watching Jake Paul, as they would like to see him fail in the sport, with the fighter claiming he is ready to fight the number one fighter in the sport,
Canelo Alvarez. Boxing fans laugh at this, as the former internet sensation has wins in boxing over fellow Youtuber AnEson Gib, ex basketball player Nate Robinson, and former UFC fighters Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley. Jake Paul is yet to get really tested by a legitimate boxer, and so that is why the Tommy Fury fight is so interesting. Fans have been urging Tommy Fury to take a step up in the class of opposition that the fighter has been facing, with the boxer only fighting so called “journeymen” so far in his young career.
Jake Paul and Tommy Fury is a mouth-watering match up. Tommy Fury is eager to prove that he is not just living off the family name, while Jake Paul is eager to win over boxing fans by fighting legitimate boxers. When and if this fight comes round, it will be a must see!
