'Moon Knight' Season Finale Review

Spoilers Ahead

The six-episode Marvel series, ‘Moon Knight’, came to an epic conclusion in the season finale. The Disney+ exclusive series follows the adventures of Marc Spectre (Oscar Isaac) and Layla El-Faouly (May Calamawy) as they battle Egyptian Gods and Avatars. The ‘big bad’, Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke), wants to cleanse the world of sinners, seeking the power of the Ancient Egyptian God, Ammit, to do so with ease.

Marvel has been pulling out all the stops with their phase four Disney+ series—Moon Knight is no different. Tensions rise as Marc and Steven fight to escape the underworld to stop Ammit from wreaking havoc on Earth, while Layla frees the God Khonsu to assist in their battle.

A shocking twist reveals Layla joining the battle with the debut of the Scarlet Scarab, fighting side-by-side with Marc and the power of Khonsu in an amazing final battle sequence. The action-packed finale will keep you glued to your seat as you watch the events unfold.

Oscar Isaac’s character adds a unique twist to the story. He plays as a man with dissociative identity disorder (DID), harbouring two present “alters”, the American mercenary Marc Spectre, and the English museum employee Steven Grant. Throughout the series we see Marc slowly come to terms with his condition, whereby in the finale he realises that his alternate personality, Steven, is not a hinderance but is instead a vital utility—a superpower.

After the final battle, Khonsu honours his wish to Marc and releases him from being his Avatar. We then see Steven and Marc back in Harrow’s doctor's office in the asylum (a throwback to Episode 5), both alters switching fluidly rather than fighting for control, symbolising how Marc has accepted Steven in his life and is no longer fighting his DID, or his perception of reality.

Marc awakes in his London apartment, with Layla nowhere in sight. The ending leaves fans with a lot of questions, as to Layla’s whereabouts, the validity of reality in the show, and, of course, what will happen next?

As always, Marvel provides an amazing post-credit scene. We see Marc experience a “blackout,” as he calls it, earlier in the episode. Comic fans already know that there exists another main alter called Jake Lockley—this “blackout” may very well be hinting at his appearance.

All-in-all, this has to be one of the best series that Marvel has made. The pacing was spot on, the finale answered a lot of questions that were brought up throughout, and we finally saw the end of Harrow. Many other questions were left up in the air to gift audiences that intrigue and desperation for a new season--it is too good to be left on a cliff-hanger.
