Rocks Reign Supreme in Paisley

The Glasgow Rocks bagged three wins out of three over the weekend in the Scottish Invitational Cup to retain the trophy.

The Lagoon Leisure Centre in Paisley was the scene for the Rocks most recent marking of silverware. St. Mirren, the Boroughmuir Blaze and the Belfast Star were all subject to a loss at the hands of the Glasgow Rocks over the weekend as they defended their trophy.

Jeremiah Bailey and Darian Adams were the star men for the Rocks in a 87-42 win over St. Mirren on Friday. Bailey was the main talisman for the winners as he controlled offensive play and created an abundance of chances, as well as demonstrating his clinical finishing when asked upon. While Adams was the main intuitive and creative force behind a large number of the chances for the Rocks.

The highlight of the game came in the fourth quarter as Adams drove deep into the St. Mirren defence and set up David Sloan who explosively slammed the ball through the net to complete an impressive alley-oop move.

The 45-point win certainly set the tone for the rest of the weekend.

On the Saturday, it was the Boroughmuir Blaze who faced the Blues. The game ended with a 100-54 score line in favour of the Rocks.

Once again, Adams proved to be a challenge for the opposition as he controlled offensive play for the Rocks. Sloan and Johnny Bunyan also impressed throughout the game.

Towards the end of the first-half, Jeremiah Bailey went down in the defensive paint and limped for the final 15 seconds of the second quarter, before the buzzer eventually sounded, causing concern amongst the fans. Bailey went on to miss Sunday’s game against the Star.

Head coach, Gareth Murray, provided re-assurance to supporters over Bailey’s condition as he said:

“It was nothing serious, he probably could’ve played [on Sunday] honestly. It was just a precaution not playing him.

“He’ll be back at practice on Tuesday though.”

On the final day of the season the Rocks completed their trio of victories as they faced the Belfast Star, along with some players from the St Mirren side.

The Rocks ended the weekend on a high as they ran out 83-53 winners.

Adams shone yet again as Bailey watched on from the side. Patrick Tape also impressed throughout as he showed great talent both offensively and defensively.

Youngster, William Kemp, also made an impact as he showed creative flair and talent to break down the opposition lines and create good scoring opportunities.

Murray commented on Kemp’s performance saying:

“He’s come in with good energy, made good shots and made lots of good plays.”

Murray went on to praise the other youth players within the side:

“The young guys have stepped in and done a great job. You can expect a few mistakes here and there but overall, they’ve all been really good and they’ve really impressed me.”

Reflecting on the weekend, Murray said:

“It was good for the guys to play together and get a feel for each other, share the basketball, get some shots off at game speed and work on defence. We’ve got a 13-man squad and 10 of them have never played here before so it was good to give them the experience.

“We’ve got a really good team, they’re all willing to work hard and lay everything on the line for the team.”
