SWPL 1: Thistle Thrashed in Six-goal Drubbing as Rangers Retain First Spot
The Rangers Women’s team took all three points to remain in top-spot after a 6-0 victory over Partick Thistle Women at the Petershill Stadium.
The victory sees Rangers maintain their 100% record at the top of the table with five wins from five as well as having not conceded a single goal with 35 goals scored.
The visitors got the first chance of the match as Lizzie Arnot tipped the ball onto the post on the back of a promising cross from Chelsea Cornet. Blues’ striker Brogan Hay was waiting in the wings for the rebound but couldn’t control the ball and let the shot fly over the bar.
Despite a resilient Thistle backline, Rangers managed to open the scoring in the 37th minute as Kayla McCoy broke into the Thistle box from the left wing and confidently drove to the six-yard line, before bearing down on the Thistle ‘keeper who dived out too early and left the goal yawning open for the winger. McCoy didn’t pass up the opportunity to give her side an emphatic lead.
It didn’t take long for the visitors to double their lead as within five minutes they had gained a second. Once again, a glancing cross into the box from Cornet created a chance for the visitors, however, this time, Hay lunged at the high ball with her boot and drilled it into the net to put her side in a commanding lead going into the interval.
Rangers wasted no time after the break as within two minutes of the second-half, they tripled their advantage. Midfielder, Jenni Danielson played a perfect ball from the left-wing over the Thistle defence, which set up Cornet for a tidy finish that left the Jags ‘keeper rooted to the spot.
Three minutes later, a perfectly lobbed ball from Cornet was expertly touched down by Arnot on the left side of the box, before chipping the ‘keeper who hesitated at first to leave her goal line, only rushing out to watch in horror as the ball glided over her head and bounced into the net.
The misery was further compounded for the Jags as Lisa Martinez made it five. Martinez towered above the rest in the box as she leaped into the air to meet a whipped ball from a direct corner, which she sent past the reach of the ‘keeper and into the net.
After not even being on the park for 10 minutes, Dina Orschmann made an impact on the score sheet for the Blue Belles after her cross ball from the left wing was met with zero opposition. The ball slowly crawled into the net with the ‘keeper making no attempt to stop the slow-paced threat on goal, in what was a defensive shambles at the back for the Jags as Rangers’ hit their sixth.
Despite being 6-0 behind, the Thistle support still managed to find joy in the game as they tauntingly jeered at opposition player Kirsty Howat sending a high ball over the bar with a mistimed volley on the edge of the box towards the end of the game.
Every player dawning red and yellow would’ve been relieved to hear the final whistle as the curtain fell on what was nothing short of a demolition at the hands of the early league leaders.
