Rangers progressed to the knockout stages of the Europa League after defeating Real Betis on their own patch 3-2 in an exhilarating match. Let’s take a look at what stood out:

It’s not over for Cyriel Dessers

It’s been a difficult season going forward for Rangers. At the time of writing, Rangers have scored 33 league goals 10 behind league leaders Celtic. At the centre of the struggles and criticism within the attacking areas is Nigerian forward, Cyriel Dessers. With a sizeable fee being paid for him, expectations were high among the Rangers support. However, it hasn’t gone to plan as Dessers hasn’t looked fit, couldn’t seem to finish his chances and overall was a disappointment. He has been all but written off by the fans. In this match, he showed there is a place for him in this Rangers side, with a goal and an assist in a crucial victory to send them into the knockout stages of the Europa League. His goal was spectacular, latching on to a beautiful reverse ball from Jose Cifuentes, then sitting the Betis defender down and nutmegging the goalkeeper. He will hope he can build on this performance and win the hearts of the fans.

Rangers must sign Abdallah Sima

The shining light of the summer recruitment, other than Jack Butland, has been Abdallah Sima. The Senegalese international bagged his 14th goal of the season for Rangers and just seems to be going from strength to strength. His goal output has been fantastic, but he also holds other attributes that make him an integral part of Philippe Clement’s team. His pace makes him a constant danger and has a lot of unpredictability, which makes him a threat. A fan favourite at Ibrox and they will be hoping he will be suiting up for the Gers next season.

Real Betis lose first home game of the season

Real Betis hadn’t lost a home game this season. Playing 10 with three draws, two of them coming against the Madrid sides. The Estadio Benito Villamarin has been a fortress this season and the fans were sure their team would get the job done. However, Rangers came and broke down the walls in a thrilling exchange. Betis beaten and Rangers revelling in their victory.
