Review: ‘Destiny 2: Lightfall’- Very fun and offers top-of-the-line FPS gameplay
A month has passed since the release of Destiny 2’s ‘Lightfall’ expansion which builds upon the ‘Light vs Dark’ saga that Bungie launched with the release of the original Destiny almost a whole decade ago.
Lightfall has a lot of positives to offer in the form of a brand-new playable space, set on the planet Neptune, the long-lost city of Neomuna. Neomuna is far different to anything we’ve ever seen before in Destiny with bright and brilliant colours, neon 80’s era visuals with towering skyscrapers, rather than the beautiful, yet derelict and abandoned Planets we’ve visited before. The play space also offers unique public events and collectables to find to ensure fun for hours on end.
As for the destination, we are introduced to two new technologically enhanced characters that are native to Neomuna to protect and defend those of Neomuna - the Cloudstriders – Rohan and the first non-binary character in the Destiny Universe, Nimbus.
The storyline, however, is rather lacklustre for an expansion at the penultimate stage of the saga and raises more questions than answering them. One payoff in the campaign was the re-introduction of a character we’ve seen recycled throughout the game which some feel is a very cheap move but provides closure.
Despite the confusing and vague narrative, the campaign is still very enjoyable to play through and allows us to fight alongside some of the allies we’ve met and grown fond of over the last decade against powerful enemies that threaten the Solar System.
The campaign also introduces the powerful new Strand subclass and offers something fresh and fun while desecrating waves of alien foes. A particular favourite amongst the community is the new grapple ability with the new subclass that allows you to swing around the city of Neomuna like Spider-Man and engage in ridiculous antics.
The expansion also offers a fun, brand-new raid experience that can feel repetitive at times but makes for a good time with friends, or a group from the community.
Overall, the expansion is very fun and offers top-of-the-line FPS gameplay in fantastically set locations, despite the vague narrative the campaign provides. Lightfall may have fallen a little short of expectations but it sets up an exciting ending moving towards ‘The Final Shape’ in 2024.
