Call of Duty: 'Los Angeles Thieves' causes upset in Grand Finals
'Los Angeles Thieves' secure the Major IV trophy defeating tournament favourites 'OpTic Texas' in the Grand Finals.
Both sides made their way through the Winners bracket this weekend before Thieves defeated OpTic 3-1 in the Winners final, securing their place in the Grand Finals. Following their earlier loss, OpTic had to regain against 'Atlanta Faze' to give them any hopes of glory this weekend, where confidence was regained with a convincing 3-0 win.
Thieves kicked the tight series off by winning the first map on Hydro Hardpoint, where OpTic seemed to be stuck with a 30-point deficit they couldn’t peg back, giving Thieves the first map.
OpTic replied immediately with a convincing win on Hotel Search and Destroy, restoring some belief to the Greenwall, before a tightly contested match on Expo Control, in which the eventual MVP Octane tipped the balance in favour of Thieves, winning the match 3-1.
LA Thieves couldn’t expand upon their lead going into Fortress Hardpoint, where OpTic put them to the sword in a defying display, showing what OpTic are capable of and that they weren’t going out without a fight to win the map 250-136.
OpTic looked to capitalise on the last map win and take the lead in the series, with the next map being of their choosing on El Asilo for Search and Destroy but were demolished as Thieves took a quick 5-round lead. OpTic reduced the deficit with the rookie DanGhosty pulling off an insane clutch to keep the game alive.
The rookie soon found himself in a 1v4 in the next round to force a round 11 but came up short, putting LA Thieves within touching distance of the Major IV trophy.
A pinnacle performance from Kenny on LA Thieves was the difference maker on El Asilo Control, making light work of the Texan side. OpTic took the lead in the map and quickly found themselves in a losing position following Thieves' dominance. But after a moment of exciting Call of Duty, fired themselves back into overtime, where the Thieves sealed the game out making them the fourth different tournament winners of the Call of Duty league season.
LA Thieves will no doubt be excited by their win, putting them in great stead to build on their form to put themselves in contention for Champs, with OpTic hoping to clinch their first win this season after two consecutive Grand Final defeats.
