The Glee Club Review

By Kiera Gordon

The Glee Club is located at 11 Renfrew Street, Glasgow

I had never been to a comedy club before this but had been desperate to experience one. With my 20th birthday coming up, it seemed the perfect time to finally go. My boyfriend and I found The Glee Club, which looked like the ideal choice! We decided to book an over-18s event for a Friday evening.

Our tickets stated we had to be seated by 6.45 pm, so we ensured we were there five minutes before this time in case of any questions. Our bags were searched upon entry, and we were ushered to the ticket desk. We had already bought our tickets; however, they keep some tickets available for walk-ins.

We paid nine pounds each for a student ticket. The staff were really friendly and happy to show us where our seats were. We then made sure to get some drinks from the bar before heading to our seats, to which I was shocked to see reasonable prices, as nowadays, most places in Glasgow charge a lot more.

Upon finding our seats, we got comfortable and looked at the online menu. You can order food on your phone that gets delivered to your table before the show starts, and throughout the show, you can use the online menu to have drinks brought to your table.

The host for the night was Chris Forbes, who you might know from 'Scot Squad'. He was really good at warming up the audience and interacting with us. The first act to appear on stage was Abigoliah Schamaun, a comedian, actress, and writer from New York.

Being extraordinarily open and personal throughout her whole show let us, as an audience, really connect with her. Being a proud queer woman who struggles with ADHD, she is unapologetic and so charismatic. After her hilarious performance, we had our first interval, where we had a chance to nip to the toilets and grab a few more drinks.

The next act was Dean T. Beirne, a comedian from Aberdeen who grew up in foster care and then experienced life in Dubai, who had a range of stories to tell. With his different experiences, he knows his style of comedy can play off these.

In 2023, he made the final of the BBC New Comedy Awards, and there is definitely more to see from him. We then had another act, Ruaridh Miller, who came on and carried the laughter. With his jokes about Edinburgh vs Glasgow, he knew how to win over a Glasgow crowd.

Making great jokes about the media and how we use it; his jokes were understood by everyone and landed one after another. After these two great performances, we had another interval before the last act.

After getting a few drinks and settling down for the last act, I could feel my face starting to ache from laughing so much. Mick Ferry, one of the most sought-after comedians, was the final act onstage. He is one of the most talented comedians in the UK and is currently based in Manchester.

Having won the UK comedy award for Best Live Stand-Up, it was clear he has an effortless ability to stand and perform in front of an audience. He connected with the audience and had us laughing during his entire set. Remarkably, he has worked with Sean Lock and Johnny Vegas.

After finishing up the show (roughly lasting around two hours) and the laughter had died down, I had time to reflect on what a great night I had had.

If you have never been to a comedy club before and are based in Glasgow, then I strongly recommend "The Glee Club", it was worth more than we spent, and I will definitely be going back.
