Tennis legend Andy Murray shockingly announced that he will be coaching former long-time rival Novak Djokovic.

The announcement was made via Instagram and X detailing Murray's return to tennis as a coach. Despite the pair being on court rivals, Djokovic joked, "He never liked retirement anyway" referencing Murray’s iconic social media post after his last tennis match when the Brit made the pun, saying he, "never liked tennis anyway."

This comes as a surprise for many tennis fans, as the British tennis legend officially retired from tennis earlier on in this year after the Paris Olympic Games. Murray will start his coaching with the 24-time Grand Slam winner through the offseason and throughout the Australian Open in 2025.

Djokovic parted ways with his former coach, Goran Ivanisevic, after six triumphant years and 12 Grand Slam titles. He hadn’t replaced his previous coach before his decision to appoint recently retired Andy Murray. Although he secured three major titles, including his record-tying 24th in the 2023 tennis season, the Serbian ace encountered unusual challenges in his career during the 2024 season. He ruled out both Grand Slam glories and any tour-level wins. Nonetheless, he did manage to secure his first Olympic gold medal this summer in Paris, an impressive win securing his title as the most decorated male tennis player.

The 2025 tennis season is set to begin with the Australian Open starting on January 12. Djokovic looks to secure his 11th Australian Open title, which would surpass Margaret Court's record. Currently, Djokovic stands as the most decorated male player in the sport's history with a prestigious 24 Grand Slam wins over the course of his professional career.

The new addition of Andy Murray as his coach is adding to this winning spirit Djokovic has already mastered. Although we are used to seeing this duo playing on opposite sides of the court, the future of Djokovic coached by Andy Murray could be a match made in tennis heaven.
