How Helldivers has been scrambling to manage its unexpected success
By Aidan Robertson
Helldivers 2 has unexpectedly burst onto the scene as the biggest game of the year so far. With over 150,000 active players on steam and even more on console platforms the momentum the game has gained in such a short time of being released has been nothing short of impressive.
Developers “Arrowhead Game Studios” has been nothing short of grateful for their rampant success especially considering the unknown nature of the series' first instalment, however, with this success has brought around a hail of issues for the small development studio specifically to do with the game's influx of players.
The first set of issues started a week after the release of the game when players started to complain about not being able to enter or play the game, this was due to the massive weight being placed on the servers after the player base exploded, leaving servers that weren't prepared or made to handle over 100,000 players be forced to carry that load.
This led to the game's stability starting to fail the players, resulting in crashing, several bugs stopping progress from being made and most recently the in-game currency not being rewarded to players after purchasing it.
Despite this however the game is still being widely praised and mostly forgiven for its mishappenings primarily due to the fact that their was no way to predict helldivers 2 being this popular especially when given the context of its release.
On Twitter, Pilestedt has responded to numerous fans and offered several comments about servers. In response to a recent question about the server issue, for example, he stated that "it's being worked on 24/7."
This is a big contrast compared to the original Helldivers that went through the opposite problem of losing its player base over the years, however in the recent days the developers have been keeping players updated with new patches to iron out its significant issues.
This in turn has started a new era for the thriving game and its ever-growing community that will hopefully keep continuing to grow.
