Big weekend For Glasgow as it hosts another major sporting event

Glasgow will this weekend welcome the superstars of world athletics as they compete at this year’s World Indoor Athletics Championships at the city’s Emirates Arena.
Major sporting events such as this one are of huge importance for Scotland. Not only do they bring many visitors to the country, they also puts Scottish sport on the world map.
Sports lecturer at City of Glasgow College Elspeth McCallum said: “I think the event is huge for Glasgow. Having any event this size allows Glasgow to get back on the map. It is really important that we use the great facilities that we have here.
“It is also important to celebrate that Glasgow and the Scottish people can hold and run events like these as it allows school children of all ages to see that this can happen right on their doorstep.”
Taking place from March 1 to 3, the venue has been renovated ahead to ensure that Scotland continues to lead the way and maintain its reputation for holding world-class sporting events.
McCallum said: “You always want more than you get but the fact that the track has been renovated is fantastic. We have a facility that is fit for purpose for this particular event.”
Back in 2014, when Glasgow hosted the Commonwealth Games, the city saw first-hand how vital sporting events are. The event attracted approximately 690,000 visitors who attended the multiple sporting events or related festivals that were organised to support the games.
The amount of publicity the event attracted was extraordinary and did so much for the city’s reputation.
