The Ben White saga
By Jack Meney
When England manager, Gareth Southgate announced his squad for the upcoming friendlies, he
soon revealed, after, that there was a certain reason for Arsenal defender, Ben White, not being in
the squad.
Southgate told the media that Ben White got Arsenal sporting director, Edu Gaspar, to communicate
to England representatives, that he did not want to be considered for England selection.
On the same day that this was announced, the extension of White’s contract at Arsenal was,
coincidentally, also announced. The reasons given at the time for this decision was that White
wanted to focus on his club football, which at the time of hearing, enthralled the supporters of the
gunners as they took it that it emphasised his commitment to the club.
There has been wonders around Ben white and his situation with England ever since the Qatar
World Cup, in 2022, as he left the camp during the tournament without much explanation.
At the time of the announcement about his request to not play for the national team, ex-players
have been very vocal around the situation, criticising the defender. Ex Tottenham Hotspur player,
Jamie O’Hara was not happy about the situation, saying; “I’m sorry but I think you’re a bit of a
disgrace to be honest”.
It has been reported that England assistant coach, Steve Holland, said during the World Cup that;
“White was not sufficiently interested in football”.
Southgate denied that his assistant’s comments caused white to leave the England camp, saying that
there was “never a problem with Steve Holland and Ben White”.
Despite Southgate’s comments, people believe that the comments that have been mentioned did take place after it has come to light that during the camp, Holland asked Kyle Walker a question and then asked White the same question, which he could not answer which is apparently when Holland said what he said.
There has been criticism for White but there has also been support for him, during this challenging time. Ex Arsenal midfielder, Cesc Fabregas has said; “If he doesn’t want to play international football, it’s not that he doesn’t feel he’s English or whatever. When he plays for Arsenal, he’s in his (own) bed, probably 90% of the season you work and then you go home, and he can do his own thing.”
