Nickelback kick of their European tour in style
By Gary Downie
On the 16th May, dad rock titans Nickelback played the OVO Hydro, kicking off the European dates for the ‘Get Rollin’’ tour, in support of the band’s latest album. The tour only featured two songs from the new album, the songs being ‘Those Days’ and the heavier ‘San Quentin’. The setlist took the fans through a journey of the band's discography, featuring songs from the earlier days and the bands biggest hits.
The setlist featured some of the band’s biggest songs, like the iconic ‘Rockstar’, ‘How You Remind Me’, ‘Animals’ and the infamous meme song ‘Photograph’. Chad Kroeger, lead singer of the infamous band, introduced the latter by referencing the iconic meme by saying, “... so a certain generation would refer to this next song as look at this graph.” to which the crowd erupted with a massive applause and lots of cheering.
However, a lot of fans were a little disappointed due to the set not having ‘If Today Was Your Last Day’ another one of the bands biggest songs. Some people could be heard saying they wished the song was played, as they walked out of the Hydro. Despite not having the fan favorite, they did however bring the support act ‘The Lottery Winners’ on stage to sing the Oasis classic ‘Don't Look Back in Anger’. The band closed off the show with ‘Gotta Be Somebody’ and one of the bands biggest hits, ‘Burn It to The Ground’ which really got the crowd going.
However, the concert was not an uneventful one. During the song ‘Rockstar’, a fan was brought on stage to sing along with the band. Only she did not as she was too busy taking selfies while on stage and not singing. It went on for so long a member of the stage crew had to try take her phone off her and put the microphone in her face so she would sing. Sadly she did not take the hint as she proceeded to take her selfies, even with Chad trying to get her to sing as that is why she was up there after all. The most drama came during ‘How You Remind Me’, when the band had to stop the song to make sure a fan who fainted got the medical attention she required. Luckily the woman was fine once she was up.
Nickelback kicked off the tour with style, bringing an exceptional performance and atmosphere which really makes it hard to see why they get so much hate.
