In 1975, NBC (National Broadcasting Company) premiered the first episode of their sketch show Saturday Night Live! A groundbreaking show which began many comedy careers throughout the show’s 50 years. From John Belushi to Will Ferrell, many big names have given us laughs, and many have done so together. But with all these comedy stars constantly making us laugh the question is what are some of the best sketches from each decade?

From the 70s we have we have The French Chef starring Dan Aykroyd. In this sketch, Aykroyd is imitating celebrity chef Julia Child. Doing a terrible impression of her, he shows us how to prepare a goose. He then accidentally cuts open his finger and an ungodly amount of blood shoots out. He then tries to continue the cooking but eventually passes out from the blood loss. This is a classic sketch that still holds up after all these years!

The 1980s gave us the classic sketch Mister Robinson’s Neighbourhood starring Eddie Murphy. In this sketch, Murphy does a parody of Mr Rogers, beloved children's television star. Contrasting the wholesome aspects of Mister Rogers, this sketch’s main protagonist gives his cynical takes on life, often talking about crime and poverty. This is a classic sketch that is still talked about and frequently called back to when Eddie makes appearances on the show.

The 90s brought in a whole bunch of new talent; Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Ana Gasteyer. But one of the most famous was Chris Farley, who was a show stealer in many sketches but one stands out. Chippendales stars Patrick Swayze and Farley as two people auditioning to be Chippendale strippers. In this hilarious sketch both actors try to one-up each other to win, ending up taking their tops off and dancing about. A classic, must-watch sketch to celebrate the 50th anniversary.

The 2000s gave us the famous sketch, More Cowbell. Featuring most of the cast at the time and celebrity host Christopher Walken, this sketch is about Blue Oyster Cult recording their song Don’t Fear the Reaper. Christopher Walken plays the band’s producer and repeatedly interrupts the recording to ask for there to be “more cowbell” in the song. The band gets riled up when the cowbell player tries to take centre stage, forcing Walken to come in and utter “I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.” This is the most watched sketch on the SNL YouTube channel and is a must watch for celebrating SNL’s 50th anniversary.

Black Jeopardy is one of the most watched sketched on the SNL YouTube channel that came from the 2010s. In this sketch, Tom Hanks plays a redneck southern man participating in a version of the game show Jeopardy catered towards the black community. Hanks, wearing a MAGA hat and bald eagle t-shirt, answers all the questions correctly, often with the other contestants agreeing with the answers. Black Jeopardy is an extremelyfunny sketch, that shows cultural differences from different backgrounds.
