With the lead up to her new album, “Mayhem”, Lady Gaga feeds her little monsters with a third single, “Abracadabra”. Prior to Abracadabra, Gaga released “Disease” and “Die With A Smile” featuring Bruno Mars which has been in the number one spot for its fifth week in a row in Billboard’s Hot 100 songs.

[Verse 1]

“Pay the toll to the angels

Drawin’ circles in the clouds

Keep your mind on the distance

When the devil turns around”

As “Abracadabra” begins you get teased with a snippet of the chorus with repetition of the songs name, before, in true Gaga fashion, a story is told. Compared to “Die With A Smile” covering connotations of love and loss, “Abracadabra” takes a more celestial tone as she sets up the rest of the song singing about angels and the Devil. Gaga is also reaching out to the listener in the first verse with the lines “keep your mind on the distance / when the Devil turns around” which can be interpreted as telling you to not stray from your goals and to not let anyone or anything be a distraction.

[Pre-Chorus]

“Like a poem said by a lady in red

You hear the last few words of your life

With a haunting dance, now you're both in a trance

It's time to cast your spell on the night”

Gaga’s story telling continues with mentioning the “lady in red”. The lady in red is a very prominent figure in folklore and is usually described as a rejected lady, a lady of vanity or a lady killed in a fit of passion which ties together the themes of angels and the Devil with the afterlife. The rest of the song is set up from the pre-chorus as “It’s time to cast your spell on the night” directly relates to the lyrics in the chorus as Gaga casts the whole song upon you.

[Chorus]

"Abracadabra, amor-oo-na-na

Abracadabra, morta-oo-ga-ga

Abracadabra, abra-oo-na-na"

In her tongue she said, "Death or love tonight”

Revisited from the intro, the chorus is accompanied with Latin dialect like “amor” and “morta” which translated means love and death. Gaga can be imagined almost casting a spell on the listener but rather than literally casting love and death she casts the beat the whole song upon you. The chorus continues with the celestial tone as Gaga sings, “In her tongue she said”, which is considered to be a form of demonic possession relating with the spell casting.

[Post-Chorus]

Abracadabra, abracadabra

Abracadabra, abracadabra

Feel the beat under your feet, the floor's on firе

Abracadabra, abracadabra

This single reintroduces Gaga back into the clubbing scene as the whole song serves a beat that quite literally feels like “the floors on fire”. Gaga’s spells take over and all you feel when the song comes on is the overwhelming urge to dance and hit every beat given to you by Mother Monster. With previous club hits like “Applause” and “G.U.Y”, Gaga runs the dance floor once again allowing us the chance to be ourselves and to properly enjoy her music whilst being our purest form.

In an interview with Elle Magazine Gaga said: “The dance floor is always the place where I try to improve myself as a human being”
