The moment all Formula 1 fans have been waiting for has arrived: we are finally at our first Grand Prix of the 2025 season. With emotions running high, the much-anticipated first race occurred in rainy Melbourne, leaving us with an action-packed opener for the season.
McLaren debuted their powerful car, which led Lando Norris to his fifth career win. The McLaren driver also crucially ended Max Verstappen's 63-race streak of consistently leading the Drivers' Championship. Lando Norris demonstrated a confident and strong performance during the Australian Grand Prix, whilst his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished 9th due to sliding into the gravel on his 44th lap. A significant takeaway from this was McLaren's cushioned performance, prolifically keeping a Red Bull and a Mercedes at bay.
Melbourne presented us with a chaotic and thrilling race. The opening race, which welcomed six new rookies, ended dramatically with only Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Ollie Bearman finishing the full race. Isack Hadjar, Liam Lawson, Jack Doohan and Gabriel Bortoleto were the rookies who ultimately did not finish the race. The ruthless rain had no mercy for the new drivers on the grid, prompting a tricky first race for the bulk of the rookies.
Mercedes displayed a healthy performance with George Russell securing a place on the podium for this season's opener. Notably, Mercedes won their appeal over rookie Kimi Antonelli's five-second penalty, bumping his fifth place up to fourth place.
With the immense hype surrounding Sir Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari, the opening for the 2025 season was anything short of ideal for Ferrari. The Tifosi were met with some bizarre qualifying results of P7 for Charles Leclerc and P8 for Sir Lewis Hamilton, with both drivers highlighting the car's inconsistency.
However, the dreamy expectations of an all-star driver lineup and a promising car were met with finishing positions of P8 for Charles Leclerc and P10 for Sir Lewis Hamilton. The well-known Ferrari frustrations have made their way into the 2025 season, with minor mistakes and miscommunication ever so present in the Ferrari garage. With a rocky opening to the season, the Tifosi can only hope that everything will fall into place moving forward.
