The importance of fundraisers for charities

By Skye Morgan

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations found that 45% of Scottish charities spent more than they managed to generate in 2023. This show how important fundraisers are to charities, as it may help them keep going a little bit longer.

At 7pm on 20 March 2025, Noah Palmer in collaboration with Frog_Events, are hosting a fundraiser gig for transgender charities, Mermaids and Trans Kids Deserve Better (TKDB).

Toby, spokesperson from Frog_Events said: “I think fundraisers are important, not only for the obvious reasons of giving money, but also to raise awareness and promote the ideals of the charity among the community.

“This event has brought a lot of people together, and I hope that it will help people in the trans and greater LGBTQ+ community feel safer and more at home in the Glasgow music scene.”

The gig is a punk rock/metal theme, with performers such as ‘Gnasher’, ‘Warbitch’ and ‘Moth?’, each with their respective styles.

Mermaids is a charity that was set up in 1995 to support transgender, non-binary and gender questioning children and young people.

They are one of the UK’s leading trans-focused charities that provide services for transgender, non-binary and gender-diverse children and young people but also provide support for families and professionals involved in their care.

TKDB is an organisation that protest for better rights for transgender young people. They have organised demonstrations such as camping outside of Wes Streeting’s office after the ban on puberty blockers for transgender young people under 18 was announced.

Their most recent protest was on 3 March 2025 when nine young activists staged a craft-in at the US Embassy in London, where they sat in ‘mournful silence’ crafting friendship bracelets with trans flags on it.

Toby said: “I think with things like this it must be quite hard to choose among all the great organisations that are around, we can’t do it all – even though we wish we could!

“If we can do just a little thing to make people feel a bit better and put some funds towards something positive, I’d say it’s well worth the effort.”

The event will be hosted at The Record Factory on Byers Road, at 7pm tonight (Thursday 20 March 2025).
