Folk has been one of the premier music genres since it expanded to the mainstream in the 1930s. The genre has undergone many generations, from the rise of contemporary folk through artists such as Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake, all the way to modern day 'singer-songwriter' artists such as Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver. Here are some of our picks for the best singer-songwriter albums released so far this year.
For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women) - Japanese Breakfast
This might be the prettiest album released so far this year. An amazing display of songwriting and structural nuance, this indie-folk record is strong in all aspects. The instrumentation is wonderful with all the twinkling piano keys, soft guitar plucks and grand string sections, accompanied by some beautiful vocals from lead singer Michelle Zauner.
Luminescent Creatures – Ichiko Aoba
This is the lushest album released this year so far. Littered with aquatic textures, sweet vocals and beautiful instrumentation, this album soothes the soul in emphatic fashion. Don’t let the fact that the album isn’t in English deter you from experiencing utter bliss in music form.

People Watching – Sam Fender
Although not a folk artist, he has some glaring singer-songwriter elements in his music. This record is a huge step-up from his previous work, I can see this ending as an album of the year contender. Filled with not only some of the most potent songwriting from Sam but also containing some of his catchiest songs ever. This album is a must listen for both casual fans and critics alike.
You Are The Morning – jasmine.4.t
By far the least known album on this list, but still worth a listen. This is the debut album for the band under the boygenius record label. It’s quite an experimental listen, varying from embodying the spirit of classic contemporary folk in some songs to going full indie-rock in others. Considering it’s their debut album, it’s still very rough around the edges. However, it still is worthy of your time.
