Tips and tricks to stay safe this Halloween
By Brooke Hughes
During the Halloween season, people can tend to act more reckless than usual. This can cause dangerous situations for young people. So, these are the top 10 safety tips for trick or treating this Halloween.
Keep all children from consuming any sweets given before properly inspected to avoid any harmful objects, such as blades and drugs. To avoid allergic reactions, do not accept any sweets that are not in their original packaging or eat any home-baked foods from unknown places.
Be sure to remove any choking hazards on costumes or in sweets for young children.
If your child is trick or treating alone with friends, be sure they create a buddy system and never go off alone. This can reduce the risk of getting lost or hurt.
Be sure to always walk on pathways. Near roads, be sure to use zebra crossings and to always look both ways.
Children should always have a flashlight, glowstick or some item of reflective clothing to be easily spotted in a crowd.
Be sure that children layer up this Halloween as it is very cold outside.
Halloween costumes are highly flammable as their materials are not always up to the same safety standards as regular clothes due to their cheap mass production. Be sure to stay away from any candles, lit pumpkins or other sources of fire.
If driving in estate or residential areas, be sure to be extra cautious as small children may be carelessly trying to cross roads. On average, children are twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween, according to safekids.org.
Never enter a stranger’s house. Entering an unknown person’s house can be fatal as they could seriously harm you, no matter how friendly they seem.
Always keep your wits about you and don’t stare at phones or any other devices. Keep your eyes open and be aware of your surroundings.
Hopefully everyone can have a safe and fun Halloween this year by taking these safety tips on board. Have a spooktacular time!
