25 years of Pokémon Trading Card Game "Celebrations": The three most expensive cards from this set

The latest Pokemon set “Celebrations” has been released at last, bringing new twists in art style and nostalgic art design in equal measure with the 25 card main-set and respective 25 card sub-set in this 50-card offering.

Let’s celebrate 25 years of Pokemon with this celebratory set and deep-dive into the three most valuable cards - their history, their importance.

Honourable mention: Tapu Lele GX (60/145)

Tapu is the rarest card in this set with a pull rate of 1/259 packs. This card appeared in the 2017 set Guardians Rising and is a total outlier and wildcard in this set. Despite the rarity and lack of nostalgia behind this card it takes the crown but will not be featured officially on this list due to a lack of true desire for the card selling for an insignificant £14 on eBay as of October 14th.

3. Gold-star Umbreon (17/17)

This card needs no explanation, the gold-star era remains highly respected in the hobby and this Umbreon card encompasses the mid-2000’s style with the simplistic, understated look many adults will remember as kids collecting. This card fetches £55 on eBay as of October 14th.

The price is indicative of a desire for the cards and partly dictated by the pull rates. This means the more commonly pulled a card is the lower the price. So, at first glance at this setlist, many may guess differently than the value dictated in today’s list.

One thing remains true, the art of these retro cards is a staple of the Pokemon company and they have catalyzed people in their mid 20’s/early 30’s buying into the hobby out of reminiscence hence the high premiums for the cards in today’s list.

2. Gold Mew (025/025)

This full art Mew iteration is eye-catching, a Sword and Shield-style gold format for Mew with the blue colour makes this card highly desirable for collectors fetching £60 on eBay as of October 14th.

1.      Celebrations Charizard (4/102)

This is the most iconic card of all time with the iconic base-set artwork and this rendition fetches a high price of £120 on eBay as of October 14th.

This card is well-known for being the chase card upon the original release of Pokemon TCG in 1996. This card in original 96 forms in a professionally graded PSA 10 condition by experts fetched $220k in February of this year. No wonder people are clamoring for this card hoping the value goes up over time.
