Premier League: Three Things we Learned as Covid Strikes Teams
The next round of midweek fixtures were played out, but many games were postponed due to COVID-19 outbreaks, some games however still managed to go ahead and it remains to be seen what the future holds.
Chelsea lose ground in Everton draw (Chelsea- 1 Everton- 1)
Chelsea have lost ground in the title race after their draw, and are now four points off the top. There are now questions raised for Thomas Tuchel, this being the first time in a while his tactics have received massive criticism, and rumours of discontent amongst the board and the manager won’t help in the teams pursuit of the title.
Everton, despite drawing, did not look convincing and will need to step up their performances in the future to push them up the table as they currently sit 14th. Rafa Benitez will continue to face multiple inquisitions on his setup and his team selection and will need to sort something to save the Toffees season.
Chelsea were made to rue their missed chances as they failed to take all three points and only have themselves to blame with guilt edge chances missed by Reece James and Mason Mount ultimately costing the blues.
City Slaughter Leeds at Etihad (Man City- 7-Leeds- 0)
Manchester City are now looking to be strong favourites to win the title after they placed a massive statement at Leeds’ expense. Pep Guardiola will look to continue this high scoring form especially entering a hectic schedule and will want to get as many points as they can before the potential of the season being postponed.
Leeds are beginning to enter a danger territory, and are not routed to a relegation battle. Marcelo Bielsa will need to try and find a way to get his team back on form because if they continue to play like this and getting embarrassed to teams, they will find themselves falling into the relegation spots.
It was one way traffic from minute one for Man City, but Leeds did not help themselves with constant defensive errors being their biggest problem, and the citizens took full advantage as they were at their ruthless best.
Liverpool beat Newcastle to stay on track (Liverpool- 3 Newcastle -1)
Liverpool firmly remain in the reckoning, but will be slightly concerned over their next few games as it was confirmed that three first team players had tested positive for COVID 19, so it remains to be seen what their future games hold. They remain a point behind Man City in second place.
Newcastle are starting to play good football under Eddie Howe, but they are still struggling to win more games. Hardly anyone expected them to get a result versus Liverpool, but they need to be getting points as soon as possible if they are to stay up this season.
Liverpool may have suffered an early scare after Jonjoe Shelvey put Newcastle in front, but they remained calm and scored three times to win, with Trent Alexander Arnold’s strike being the pick of the bunch.
