Motherwell vs Queen of The South - Match Report

Motherwell came from two goals down to win 3-2 against Queen of the South in their first home match in front of supporters since March 2020.

Ruari Paton’s first half double put the cinch Championship visitors in a comfortable position, but Graham Alexander’s men fought back. Kaiyne Woolery’s first ‘Well goal sealed the home team’s second Premier Sports Cup Group F win after Tony Watt and Ricki Lamie goals, putting ‘Well in first by two points with a game in-hand. Queen’s sit third.

Within the first 20 minutes of the match, several attempts at goal came from Motherwell but all fell short. Queen of The South were ahead just before half-time as Paton fired the ball past Liam Kelly after the ‘Well goalkeeper’s save rebounded back into play.

Outside Fir Park

Paton didn’t stop there as he doubled the lead shortly after. Motherwell came out swinging in the second half, Watt’s header bringing the game to 2-1 within the first two minutes of the second half. Lamie then proceeded to claim the leveller after a Steven Lawless cross was met by Lamie, who launched it into the net.

The goal rush continued for Motherwell. Woolery volleyed the ball from 15 yards into the back of the net, sealing a home win as fans were put on an emotional rollercoaster on their first day back. Here are three things we learned:

 Captain O’Donnell

After previous captain Declan Gallagher departed for Aberdeen, right-back Stephen O’Donnell has shown himself to be a strong leader and had worn the band in his absence. O’Donnell and Liam Kelly were heard shouting orders throughout the game and although no official appointment has been made, the Scotland international looks a safe bet.

Paton key

The new QOTS signing has scored three goals already and could be vital player going forward for the Championship side. Signing from Stranraer after scoring 10 goals in 24 games last season, Paton is determined to prove that he can play against top level teams.

Premier difficulty

Queen of the South repeatedly cause Motherwell’s defenders problems in the game, as did Queen’s Park in the Well’s opening game. Alexander’s team have persevered through difficult challenges and a win over Lanarkshire rivals Airdrieonians next week should see them into the last 16.
