Cinch Scottish League One: Three Things we Learned as Cove Extend Lead
Scotland’s third division continued with teams either continuing their promotion charge, aiming to break into the promotion play-offs or trying to steer themselves clear of relegation trouble.
Let’s look at three things we learned from the latest set of results…
Diamonds climb up to second in five-goal thriller at New Broomfield
Goals from Callum Fordyce and Scott McGill had the Diamonds comfortably in the lead at the interval, however, Brad McKay’s goal early in the second-half halved the deficit for the visitors. Calum Gallagher’s strike four minutes from time restored the home side’s two-goal lead, but Falkirk striker Anton Dowds struck home to ensure a nervy finish for the hosts.
The victory for Ian Murray’s Airdrie lifts them up to second place in the league, eight points behind leaders Cove and with a game in hand. For Martin Rennie’s Falkirk, they are now three points behind fourth place Queen’s Park in fifth, having played a game more.
Cove stretch lead to eight points as Montrose slip to third
Rory McAllister 16 th goal of the season proved enough for the league leaders as they secured all three points at the Balmoral Stadium. The victory made it nine consecutive wins for Paul Hartley’s men, who are now unbeaten in 15 matches- having last tasted defeat in October.
The defeat for Stewart Petrie’s Montrose ended their own 14 match unbeaten run, which sees them drop to
third. The Gable Endies’ are now two points behind Airdrie, who have played a game less. Dumbarton strike twice to end winless run as Fifers cut further adrift
A goal and assist from new signing Gregg Wylde, as well as a debut goal for Joshua Oyinsan secured the
hosts first home win since September. The victory ends a run of five consecutive defeats for Stevie Farrell’s Sons’ who despite remaining ninth, now find themselves a point off eighth placed Alloa.
For Stevie Crawford’s East Fife, they are now 10 games without a win and nine points adrift off safety.
In the weekend’s other matches, Matthew Eldson’s header meant Danny Lennon’s Clyde looked certain to
end the day in fifth place, however Peterhead midfielder Scott Brown equalised in injury time to rescue a point for Jim McInally’s men.
Meanwhile, Alloa and Queen’s Park shared the spoils at the Indodrill Stadium as both team’s winless runs continued. Barry Ferguson’s Wasps are now six without a win, while managerless Spiders have only won once in 10 games.
