Scottish League One: Weather disrupts fixture list as three matches postponed
There were only two cinch League One matches this weekend as Peterhead’s match at home to Clyde, Dunfermline’s away trip to Airdrie and Falkirk’s visit to Alloa all failed pitch inspections…
Fontaine rescues point for Edinburgh in four-goal thriller over Montrose
Edinburgh 2-2 Montrose
Liam Fontaine’s 75th minute equaliser rescued a point for Edinburgh as they came back from behind to share the spoils with Montrose in a four-goal thriller at Meadowbank Stadium.
John Robertson opened the scoring for the hosts in the eighth minute as the Citizens went down the tunnel with a slender lead at the interval. The visitors then pulled a goal back through Craig Johnson seven minutes after the break. Rory McAllister added the Gable Endies’ second in the 63rd minute, before the former Dundee defender ensured the points would be shared with 15 minutes remaining.
The result means that the Citizens failed to captialise on the opportunity to shorten the gap on league leaders Dunfermline to two points. Meanwhile, Stewart Petrie’s Montrose are winless in three league matches as they remain in fourth.
It is a second successive home match for the capital side as they welcome basement club Peterhead on Christmas Eve, while Montrose face Airdrieonians at Links Park on Friday.
Edinburgh manager, Alan Maybury said: “It’s a little bit disappointing because there was that opportunity [to close the gap on Dunfermline]. We are more focused on ourselves and getting the points tally we want over the season. To be up near the top, we want to stay there as long as we can, so, a little bit frustrated today, but looking at the bigger picture, we are at a really good place.”
Two goals in four minutes sees Kelty dismantle Queen’s in narrow victory
Queen of the South 1-2 Kelty Hearts
Kelty Hearts gained consecutive league victories for the first time since October as two goals in the final 10 minutes saw them edge past Queen of the South in Dumfries.
The Doonhamers broke the deadlock courtesy of Ruari Paton after seven minutes on the clock and were holding onto their single goal advantage until Nathan Austin equalised for the Maroon Machine in the 80th minute. The visitors were then awarded a penalty four minutes later as Kallum Higginbotham slotted home the spot-kick to secure the three points.
The victory for John Potter’s men enabled them to go level on points with Queen’s and they now find themselves 14 points clear of second-bottom Clyde. On the other hand, defeat for the Palmerston side means they continue to occupy seventh, a position they have held since September.
It will be the third Fife derby of the season on Christmas Eve as Kelty welcome league leaders Dunfermline to New Central Park while Queen’s visit Falkirk on Friday evening.
Kelty Hearts manager, John Potter said: “We were okay first half, although we didn’t really threaten. In the second half, there was a good reaction, the substitutes that came on did well and I’m delighted to get the three points.”
Queen of the South player-manager, Willie Gibson said: “Embarrassing. I said there in the dressing room that the penny has to drop at some point, because the goals we are conceding, it’s far too easy. January is coming, so it’s about trying to pick up results in the next two games and look to strengthen in January.”
Results:

Alloa Athletic P-P Falkirk
