Qatar 2022: Best performers from the last 16

As the last 16 comes to a close, it is time to take a look back at the players that stood out for their nation and discuss whether they can continue this form going into the quarter-finals on Friday.

Here are three of the best players from the last 16:

Lionel Messi

If there is one man who has carried a nation on their back this tournament, it’s Lionel Messi. In his 1000th career appearance, the Argentina captain scored the first goal of the match as his low-driven shot was too precise and clinical for Australian ‘keeper’ Mat Ryan to reach.

Messi was the spark for his nation as fans erupted every time the PSG forward dribbled past the opposition players. It’s another step closer for Argentina as they hope to end their 36-year wait for another World Cup title.

In the quarter-finals, Messi and Co. will face Louis Van Gaal’s Netherlands side who have gone under the radar at this tournament, despite showing some really promising performances. It will be a tricky game for Argentina, but when you have a player with the calibre and experience of Messi, it makes the buildup to the match that bit easier.

Kylian Mbappe

While the main headlines will be focused on Olivier Giroud becoming France’s all-time top goal scorer, it was PSG forward Kylian Mbappe that stood out for Les Bleus. With five goals so far, the 23-year-old is now the tournament's top scorer, bringing his number of World Cup goals to nine.

In addition to his assist for Giroud’s 52nd international goal, Mbappe managed to grab a brace in the second half with two wonderful strikes past Poland ‘keeper Wojciech Szczesny.

With the young Frenchman now favourite to win the Golden Boot, his main priority will be to progress through to the semi-final as France face England on Saturday. A game that is expected to be an absolute thriller.

Jude Bellingham

It’s been a brilliant tournament so far for Jude Bellingham as the teenager yet again showed his class in England’s victory over Senegal. Despite only getting an assist for Jordan Henderson’s goal, it’s been so easy for the midfielder as he bullies his opponents off the park and is starting to become the Three Lions' biggest star.

For a 19-year-old, he looks as if he’s been playing the game for over 20 years. His maturity and willingness to get on the ball shines through, he plays with no fear and is an inspiration to any young aspiring player.

With an exciting match against France in the quarter-final to look forward to, there is no doubt we will see Bellingham continue to play at a high standard.
