Next Manager Options: Five Managerial Candidates to Replace Jim Goodwin at St. Mirren

Jim Goodwin has left his position as manager of St. Mirren to replace Stephen Glass at fellow Premiership rivals Aberdeen.

Goodwin was appointed at the Buddies in June 2019, and is held in high regard as one of the most promising upcoming managers in the Scottish game.

He led the Saints to seventh place last season, the club’s highest league position in 32 years as well as semi-final appearances in both the Scottish Cup and League Cup.

The 40-year-old departs Paisley with the club in sixth position and in this year’s Scottish Cup quarter-finals.

City Live have selected their options for who could replace the St. Mirren legend as boss…

JACK ROSS

The 45-year-old is currently out of work having been sacked by Hibernian in December of last year.

Ross was previously manager of the Buddies between 2016-2018, where he guided the club to safety in the Scottish Championship before leading them to the title the following season and promotion back to the top-flight.

He then left Paisley to move south of the border to English League One club Sunderland, before later returning to Scotland as manager of Hibernian.

Under Ross’s management, Hibs finished in third position last season, their highest finish in 16 years and also reached the Scottish Cup Final, losing to St. Johnstone.

Having lost the race to secure the Aberdeen job to Goodwin, Ross may feel he has unfinished business at the Buddies and would relish the chance to lead them in the Premiership.

DANNY LENNON

Could a St. Mirren legend be replaced by another St.  Mirren legend? Stranger things have happened.

The 52-year-old has been in charge of League One club Clyde since November 2017, and after leading the Bully Wee to promotion out of the bottom tier in 2019, Lennon has the Cumbernauld club sitting in sixth position in the table, five points off the promotion play-offs.

Lennon is regarded as one of the most genuine people in Scottish football and was previously manager of the Buddies between 2010-2014.

During Lennon’s tenure, he had the club consistently punching above their weight, with the Buddies recording two eighth place finishes in 2012 and 2014.

Lennon’s most memorable achievement during his time at Paisley was lifting the Scottish League Cup in 2013, after a 3-2 victory against Heart of Midlothian at Hampden.

The win cemented Lennon’s status as a Saints legend and alongside his club captain, Jim Goodwin, he was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2017.

Lennon also built the youth development at the club, with Scottish internationals such as, John McGinn and Kenny McLean being brought through the club’s academy.

Lennon’s contract was not renewed by the club in 2014, and eight years on, there is no denying that the Clyde boss deserves another crack at the top-flight.

If approached, Lennon may feel he has a point to prove by leading the Buddies for a second time, and having recently discussed St. Mirren and Goodwin in the Daily Record, it is clear that the club have a special place in his heart.

KEVIN THOMSON

The 37-year-old former Rangers midfielder currently has Kelty Hearts flying high in League Two, with the Maroon Machine nine points clear at the top of the table.

He also led Kelty to a Scottish Cup scalp against cup holders St. Johnstone in the Fourth Round, before being knocked out by St. Mirren.

At this moment in time, a full-time Premiership club could come too soon for Thomson, but having revealed he interviewed for the Kilmarnock job last month, it is clear that his stock in management is growing and it is only a matter of time before he makes the step up.

DEREK ADAMS

The 46-year-old is only recently out of work having been relieved of his duties as manager of English League Two club Bradford City.

Adams cut his managerial teeth at Premiership side Ross County over two spells. In his first spell, he led the Staggies to promotion to the First Division and to the 2010 Scottish Cup final, where they lost to Dundee United.

When he returned in 2011, he led the Dingwall club to promotion to the top-flight. During his last season at the club in 2014, he led County to seventh position in the table.

Since then, Adams has achieved success south of the border, leading Morecambe to promotion to League One via. the play-offs as well as a stint in charge of Plymouth Argyle.

Having now spent eight years out of Scottish football, Adams may feel he would like a return to Scotland and re-build his reputation in the SPFL.

SCOTT BROWN

Nevertheless, the Buddies have approached the Dons to speak to former Celtic captain Scott Brown. The 36-year old was part of Stephen Glass’ backroom team as a player/coach, and if he is appointed as Goodwin’s replacement - it will be his first managerial role.

News of the initial approach has proved controversial with the clubs fanbase. However, the Paisley club are believed to be looking at other candidates with experience
