The SWPL Title Race- Who are the Contenders?
As the title race rages on this year may see a new victor come out on top. Three teams have cemented themselves in the top three but who will come out on top?
Rangers
Rangers have been over taking and have been overtaken by Glasgow City the full season. Rangers had a successful season in 2020/21 and at times looked as if they were going to win the league before a handful of last minute loses saw Celtic knock them down into third.
This season Rangers have been flying high and have been a constant adversary for Glasgow City. This year Rangers have signed more players with international experience for various countries and have ramped up their attacking and defence efforts magnificently. If the title race is decided by three or less points.
Glasgow City
The 14 in a row league winners are no stranger to the top of the table, but this season has been more competitive than ever for them. With Rangers only two points ahead of them in a season where Rangers were on top for the majority of the first half of the season, they are under extreme pressure to keep their title.
Eileen Gleeson came to the club in 2021 after manager Scott Booth left the club to manage Birmingham in the Women’s Super League down south. Since her introduction City have gathered 44 points and despite dipping in and out of the top spot City are as strong as ever with notable results under their belt. These include a 6-0 win over Motherwell, 9-0 victory over Spartans and 9-0 against Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup.
Celtic
Celtic had a taste of European football and are fighting to get it back. Celtic won the SWPL League Cup earlier in the season and are a mere four points away from top spot. They have their eyes set on the Scottish Cup after defeating Rangers in a 2-1 victory at home and they have won two out of the last five Old Firm games.
Sitting in third with 39 points and 16 points clear of fourth Celtic could sneak into second soon and repeat their last minute second place takeover from last season. It’s hard to fully say who will emerge as victor this year but Rangers seem to be likely to overthrow their Glasgow counterparts. Glasgow City have been wavering throughout the season and could potentially stumble too far and lose the league for the first time in over 10 years. If Rangers do take the title from Glasgow City they will do so by the skin of their teeth.
