Madonna: Queen of Pop and Women's Music Icon
Madonna Louise Ciccone needs no introduction, her place at the top as the Queen of Pop has been firmly held for decades. Launching onto a music scene dominated by male artists and all male bands in the 1980s, Madonna fought for her spot at the top and took no prisoners.
Unapologetic, fiery, bold, an icon.
Over the course of her career, Madonna has become a voice notably for all women and the LGBTQ+ community. Going against the grain, Madonna released music that would become the soundtrack to millions of young people’s lives - and to this day is still the number one female selling artist of all time. Madonna has won the accolades of seven Grammys, two Golden Globes and two Brit Awards - her career spanning across both music and film.
“I stand for freedom of expression, doing what you believe in, and going after your dreams,” the Queen of Pop has unashamedly expressed.
Over the course of her career, Madonna has faced many controversies - but the one time where she stood up for herself as a woman and defended her right to express her sexuality in her show came during the recording of her now legendary documentary ‘Madonna: Truth or Dare.’ On her Blonde Ambition tour at a show in Canada, Madonna was threatened of arrest by local police for some of the more sexualised content of the show. Madonna bravely stood up against the criticism and refused to change the performance. This is the best example of the type of artist and woman Madonna is.
Madonna is completely unafraid to do something that isn’t considered to be the status quo - she has taken these risks throughout her career and has never compromised to the patriarchal attitude of both the music industry and the world over.
