Lyon Shatter Glasgow Warriors Dreams

The Glasgow Warriors dream of semi-final European rugby was shattered last night as they were defeated by Lyon. This would have been the first semi-final for the Warriors and they were leading 20-13 at the break.

Lyon however made a comeback and finally defeated the Warriors by 35-27. They are due to face the Wasps in the semi-final. It is all to play for as the Warriors face Edinburgh on the final game at Murrayfield with European rugby on the line next season.

The Glasgow prop Jamie Bhatti said: “I played in the game against Lyon a few years ago when we won over there. They are obviously a different side now than they were back then. It will be like what we faced out in South Africa – they look like a good set-piece side. They also got some class players in the backs like Josua Tuisova.”

In the wake of this drama is the exit of seven Warrior’s players, with some retiring or going onto other clubs. Hamish Bain, Robbie Fergusson, Rob Harley, Tom Lambert, Kiran McDonald, Ewan McQuillin, Grant Stewart are all set to leave at the end of the season with JP du Preez and Sione Vailanu coming into the squad.

Glasgow Warriors Head Coach Danny Wilson said: "Each player leaving has applied themselves, worked hard and been passionate about playing for Glasgow Warriors. We wish our leavers all the best and would like to thank them for what they have done as Warriors - their contributions both on and off the field cannot be underestimated. We’re looking forward to finishing the season together and, when the time is right, celebrating all they have given to the jersey.”
