Premier League Round-up
Title Race
Liverpool have seen their title charge dented by the hands of Spurs and Antonio Conte. The reds were left frustrated with the pragmatic approach from the opposition with the level of deep lying defending and only looking to hit them on the counter attack. A deflected Luis Diaz strike was not enough for Liverpool and as a result, the reds have faltered in the race for the title.
Manchester City took full advantage of Liverpool’s slip up up and smashed Newcastle 5-0, giving them a huge three point advantage in the title race. Goal difference may end up being crucial so it was important that they got a massive score line and it was the perfect response to their dramatic defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League. They will want to make sure they wrap the title up as soon as possible and will be keeping their eyes locked on Liverpool’s trip to Villa before they play Wolves.
Top Four Battle
Everyone would think the race for the top four would be just between Arsenal and Tottenham, but Chelsea’s recent form has seen them drawn into it after they threw away a two goal lead to Wolves. They now sit one point above Arsenal in fourth, who got the job done and defeated league strugglers Leeds United.
Spurs may have had their most difficult game of the season away to Liverpool, so it would normally be okay to walk away with a point from Anfield, but they know it’s an opportunity missed to gain ground on Chelsea and to put the pressure on ahead of their North London derby versus Arsenal midweek. It will be a tight contest in the hunt for the top four.
Relegation Scrap
Burnley’s honeymoon period under Mike Jackson is over, they were breezed past by Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa at Turf moor, putting their future in the top flight at risk once again. They were given a boost however by Leeds United putting in a schoolboy performance against Arsenal- losing once again. The future for them is looking bleaker and bleaker, they are tied with Burnley on points, but the goal swing is massive and could end up costing them.
Everton took advantage of Leicester playing in Europe midweek and got a crucial 2-1 win away from home. That win sees them sit one point clear of the drop zone with a much favourable run in, as they look to remain the only team in top flight history to never have been relegated. The toffees took advantage of Leicesters poor defending from set pieces as Mason Holgate would later score the winner after Daka equalised.
