Premier League: Three key Moments as Relegation Battle Heats up
The Premier League is in to its final handful of games, with everything still to play for. The final relegation spot between Everton, Leeds and Burnley continues to be avoided, with all teams fighting for their lives as other teams still fight at the top for European football and domestic glory.
Everton Gain Crucial win Versus Chelsea (Everton- 1 Chelsea-0)
It could end up being Everton’s biggest three points of the season, they have beaten the European Champions in Chelsea. They still remain in the bottom three of the table, but they now sit two points behind 17th with a game in hand, so everything remains to be played for and as a result of this win, it can only give the team a boost entering the final month of the season.
Chelsea need to pick up form fast, Arsenal are slowly creeping up on them in the table. Champions League football is still not a certainty and a loss to a struggling side fighting for their lives is never good for confidence, especially with a cup final coming up versus Liverpool in just a few weeks. They will need to start winning games if they are to achieve anything from this season.
It was a backs against the wall kind of performance from Everton, they dug in and fought for everything on that pitch. Jordan Pickford had the game of his life in denying the Chelsea players finding the back of the net, with Richarlison early on in the second half scoring the winning goal for the toffees.
Leeds Lose Ground after City Demolition (Leeds-0 Man City-4)
Leeds’ fate is now out of their own hands after a heavy defeat to table toppers Manchester City. They now sit in 17th , but having played a game more than 18th Everton, so as it stands, it is now down to the teams around them to drop points for them to remain in the division.
Manchester City came up with the perfect response to Liverpool winning earlier on to demolish Leeds, they remain a point ahead at the top but have cut the goal difference down to just one behind, which could end up being crucial in how their season may finish. Their focus will now switch to the Champions League as they look to book their tickets to Paris for their second final in a row.
The score line does not reflect how the game went for Leeds United. Poor set piece defending let them down once again as reflective in the first two goals. They played the game with a high intensity but struggled with their final pass to break down their opponents, which ultimately cost them big time.
Late Burnley Resurgence Gains Another Priceless win (Watford- 1 Burnley -2)
Mike Jackson and his team have proved the doubters wrong once again. The sacking of Sean Dyche still shocked many fans alike, but that new manager bounce is coming in handy at the moment as they now sit 16th in the table, level on points with Leeds. Their fate is slightly in their hands as they prove to have a much more significant goal difference than Leeds, but will need to keep up this strong run of form to stay in the top flight for another season.
Watford are all but relegated at this point, they sit 10 points behind the team above them and also having played a game more, so the chance of them staying up would be nothing short of a miracle.
They were always seen as one of the favourites to go down and it proved to be the case as they are set to spend another season in the Championship. It was the late show for Burnley, two strikes after the 80th minute got them another crucial three points on the road in their bid for survival. Watford caved in at the end and seemed to be out of ideas, with Brownhill downing them in the 86th minute to virtually seal their fate this season once and for all.
