6 ways to easily declutter your space
When you hear the term “spring cleaning”, you don’t necessarily think of cleaning in January. However, by New Year’s Day, my room desperately needed a declutter from the neglect it faced in the last couple of months of 2022.
Cleaning can be quite overwhelming for already stressed-out students, especially since mental health gets tougher to deal with during winter for some people. However, breaking down your room into sections makes it much easier to tackle, so here are six steps to cleaning your room.
1. Pick up your clothes.
The first thing I tidy before anything else is always my clothes. Whether it’s socks, pyjamas, or shoes, I pick everything up off the floor and put it away or in the washing basket to make it easier to move around.
2. Make your bed.
If your bed is the biggest thing in your room, why not tidy it first? I like cleaning my bed at the start because it makes my room look much cleaner than it is and takes a bit of the overwhelming pressure off the whole thing.
3. Remove dirty dishes.
I will forever be a culprit for having empty glasses, mugs and plates at the side of my bed (and everywhere else), so I make sure all dishes are downstairs, and all empty bottles are in the bin.
4. Put all rubbish in the bin.
Along with dishes, there are always empty wrappers, cotton pads or clothes tags somewhere in my room, so I get a bin bag to collect any rubbish, and since it was Christmas, I threw away gift boxes and wrapping paper as well.
5. Dressing table.
If you’re like me and leave all makeup, skincare, and hair products out when you get ready, then your dressing table will be your next step and will make your room look tidier. This includes putting away hair dryers, straighteners, curlers, hair slips, and jewellery.
6. Hoover.
No clean bedroom is complete without a quick hoover around the room to collect all the pringle crumbs that may have accumulated on your floor. When I am feeling more energised, I like to bring out the small round attachment and clean the skirting boards.
7. Light a candle (optional).
Feel free to light a candle and bring your mum in to show off your room!
