Film Review: The Menu

The Menu official movie poster. Picture source: Searchlight Pictures

The comedy/thriller is directed by Mark Mylod and stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Fiennes, and Nicholas Hoult.

The film follows a young couple, Margot and Tyler, who visit an exclusive destination restaurant on a remote island where an acclaimed chef has prepared a luxurious menu, with a few surprise ingredients of terror and suspense that shocks and engages the audience.

Mark Mylod does a fantastic job at balancing the humour and thriller aspects of the film, neither is too much or too little. The pacing is excellent, and the comedic timing is perfect, whilst staying true to the intense moments. It is easily one of the most entertaining films of the year.

The film is massively self-aware, and likewise, has social commentary throughout regarding the current state of the world – and it does so in a way that is entertaining and truly funny. This is credited to the amazing performances from Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Fiennes, Nicholas Hoult, and even John Leguizamo, who provides hilarious comedic relief. This ensemble, with the talent of the director, successfully kept the viewer engaged and entertained from beginning to end.

This film overall was a very enjoyable and exciting film to watch. The only setback was the dialogue was a little silly but those moments were very brief and rare. However, this film is one of the best releases of the year.
