Fallout TV show trailer review

Trailer for Amazon’s video game adaptation TV series, Fallout

After much anticipation, the first trailer for Amazon’s Fallout series releasing on 12 April 2024 has finally dropped. With familiar iconography from Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic role-playing series and featuring series staple retro music, the trailer gives an exciting look at the action-packed show.

From heavy suits of power armour, desolate wastelands, and mutated monsters, the show promises to live up to the eccentric nature of its game counterparts. Boasting impressive looking practical effects with impressively integrated digital effects the show looks to capture the aesthetic of the games in satisfying detail.

Taking a note from the games, the show will similarly start in one of the iconic vaults, with the main character, played by Ella Purnell, donning the familiar blue and yellow jumpsuit, giving audiences a change to be introduced to the treacherous world of the wasteland along with the initial cast. Surprisingly, the trailer decides to hide some of the most iconic aspects of the series that are all but guaranteed to show up at some point; the Deathclaw and Nuka Cola.

Unfortunately, the trailer is missing some of the grit and charm from the series prior to Bethesda’s acquisition. Initially developed by Black Isle Studios and published by Interplay Entertainment, the first two Fallout games were full of witty humour, grim scenarios and distinctive imagery.

From gnarlier looking ghouls, more gruesome looking monsters, and the ever-iconic T-51 style of power armour. While Bethesda’s take on the franchise still seems optimistic it can be slightly disappointing to reminisce on what the series once was.

Despite the show's potential misgivings, the Fallout show looks to be a fun and exciting adventure in the post-apocalyptic world of the wasteland. Exploring familiar monsters and scenarios while also giving us fresh new stories to enjoy.

Fallout is Amazon’s try at taking advantage of the recent success of video game adaptation movies and tv shows like Mario, Sonic and The Last of Us
