Some films are made for an easy watch; to simply watch and enjoy mindlessly. However, some films are made to evoke emotions from their audience. Here is a list of films that make audiences feel both happy and sad; a bittersweet experience.
Call Me by Your Name (2017)- Directed by Luca Guadagnino
The film is set in Northern Italy in 1983 and follows Elio, a teenager, who develops feelings for Oliver, his father’s temporary assistant. Their relationship is temporary and when the summer ends, Oliver leaves Italy to go back to America, leaving Elio heartbroken. However, as fleeting as their relationship was, Elio realises his sexual orientation and comes to terms with it, despite how painful the journey of figuring it out was.
Good Will Hunting (1997)- Directed by Gus Van Sant
The film follows Will Hunting, a janitor at MIT, but also a mathematical genius. When Will solves the equation set by Professor Gerald Lambeau, the professor takes Will under his wing and offers him a job, given he goes to therapy. However, when he faces an emotional crisis about his enigmatic but troubling upbringing. He takes help from psychiatrist Dr Sean Maguire, who helps him recover.
Dead Poets Society (1989)- Directed by Peter Weir
Set in Welton Academy in Vermont, Todd Anderson begins his junior year at an all-male preparatory boarding school. There, he meets a progressive English teacher who encourages his student to break free from the norm, go against the status quo, and live life unapologetically and be themselves.
Her (2013)- Directed by Spike Jonze
An introverted writer, Theodore Twombly, buys an Artificial Intelligence system to help him write. Upon discovering the AI’s ability to learn and adapt, he falls in love with it, referring to the AI as Samantha.
