Opinion: ‘La La Land’ is the last true film classic

The idea of a “classic”, relates to a piece of work expertly crafted in its execution. A piece of work that others will refer to when creating their own vision and continuously draw from years down the line. For example 'Jaws', with its ground-breaking use of camera work or '2001: A Space Odyssey', with its pioneering of special effects.

In more recent memory, film classics are harder to come by as rehashing film tropes and ideas is rife within Hollywood and true originality is becoming harder and harder to create. So, what is the last true film classic?

'Avatar'? Innovative in its reliance on motion capture technology and CGI on a scale larger than ever seen before, or something closer to 'Casablanca', a drama perhaps? 'The Banshees of Inisherin', an expertly produced tale that is both quietly humorous while also being enormously tragic. No, not that either.

The true classic goes to nonother than, 'La La Land'. Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, this musical drama-comedy is 128 minutes of true brilliance. A blend of new Hollywood tricks and old lends this film to a lasting feeling, that won’t soon go out of style.

The story follows Sebastian, a passionate jazz pianist, and Mia, a hopeful actress. Both are making a living in Los Angeles as they strive to achieve their dreams. We follow their journey together and separately as they struggle to juggle their ambitions in their careers and their love for each other.

The cinematography, vibrant colour palette, sweeping long takes, and expertly rehearsed choreography blend perfectly with an original score by Justin Hurwitz that elevates the story to new heights. Altogether, this creates a tragically beautiful love story that follows its two leads played by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.

The story exists out with the realm of reality but remains grounded in moments that produce excellent acting performances and undeniable chemistry. These moments between Gosling and Stone make each scene they share together feel that much more true and sincere with each passing word.

What truly makes this film a masterpiece and a classic is its originality. It is larger than life story with set pieces that take the audience to new planes and through the stars. Visual storytelling is almost as important as the musical numbers that let the viewer into the mind of its characters. The combination of the two creates a sense of bliss in moments representative of each other’s journey from Mia and Sebastian's first dance to their last.

Overall, La La Land has cemented itself as a great achievement across both film and music, receiving multiple awards and nominations, including best director and best original score at the Academy Awards. But most importantly the execution of all those involved has made this film a true classic.
