The Masters 2023
Jon Rahm took home the Masters title, along with the famed green jacket and a $3.24 million payday. The biggest prize money ever in the history of the competition.
Rahm is now the fifth Spaniard to win the tournament and he has also returned to the top of the world golf rankings after winning the first major of the year. The victory is Rahm’s second major title of his career after his US Open victory in 2021 and ends an all-American run of winners at The Masters for the first time in six years.
In a divided golf world, both LIV Golf and PGA players came together to compete at Augusta. Questions were asked of the LIV players before the tournament with many doubting they would be up to the standard of the best players in the world. Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson both ended the tournament at eight under, a joint second place showing that the LIV players can still mix it at the majors.
Koepka went into the final day leading by two but finished his round at three-over par on Sunday. This let Rahm come from behind to win with a fantastic three-under par last day. Koepka blamed a ‘brutally slow’ group in front for his poor form with Patrick Cantlay taking his time on the greens.
Overall, a great performance from Rahm ensured a major win for a PGA tour player. The Spaniard leapfrogged Scottie Scheffler as he returned to No.1 in the world, and Phil Mickelson showed that old age is not affecting his game with a record-breaking over-50s score and became the oldest golfer to post a top-five finish at Augusta.
