Things You Might Have Missed During Award Season

Here is a list of some things you might’ve missed during the current award season so far!
1. History Making for Black Women
The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards took place on the 15 January which is also known as Martin Luther King Day. During the ceremony, we saw Quinta Brunson win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary, and Ayo Edebriri win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for The Bear. This is the first time in Emmy history that two black women have won these actress categories for a comedy series at the same ceremony. Also, Niecy Nash-Betts won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her work in Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
2. The First Indigenous Golden Globe Winner
On the 7 January, the 81st Golden Globes took place, in which Indigenous actress, Lily Gladstone won for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon. When she got up on stage to accept her award, she spoke in Blackfeet language, which is an Algonquian language spoken by the Blackfoot or Niitsitapi people. She then resorted back to English saying, “I'm so grateful that I can speak even a little bit of my language, which I'm not fluent in up here because, in this business, Native actors used to speak their lines in English and then the sound mixers would run them backwards to accomplish Native languages on camera.”
3. Elton John Getting His EGOT
During the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, Elton John won the award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for being a producer on Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium. Winning that award made him an official EGOT winner. An EGOT is an acronym for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards, in which is referred to people that have won all four of the major American performing art awards. Elton john became the 19th person to have achieved this status. He has previously won two Oscars, five Grammy awards, as well as one Tony award.
4. Barbie Winning Box Office Achievement
The 81st Golden Globes introduced a new category called Golden Globe Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, in which it honoured the films that made history at the box office throughout the year. Barbie won the award beating films such as Oppenheimer and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, since it was the top grossing film of the year. The film earned over $1.4 billion dollars at the box office. Barbie became the highest grossing film by a solo female movie director, surpassing the film Hi, Mom, directed by Jia Ling.
